WHO IS THE INDEPENDENT
In Main Street Gembrook, an hour South East of Melbourne’s CBD, a modest door leads to a spacious dining room with an open kitchen and sounds of tango.

The heritage listed building was once a motor garage. Its retro-industrial interior -designed by Gordon & Henry Architecture- is the setting for chef-patron Mauro Callegari’s modern Argentinian cuisine. His Argentinian, French and Italian roots are exemplified in his menu, most of which is sourced from nearby growers and suppliers.

Local, Argentinian and rest of the world wines can be found on the beverage list. There is a garden courtyard to enjoy tapas and cocktails with a play area for the children. Front windows frame the timeless view of J.A.C Russell park and Puffing Billy’s Gembrook Railway platform.

The latest collection of paintings by Mauro’s father – Jose Callegari - are hung on the walls throughout the restaurant. Artworks by Gembrook artists - Sue Jarvis and John Krzywokulski complement the contemporary atmosphere where architecture, art, food and wine creates the experience.

The restaurant opened September 2014.
